Fixing a Wet phone

The toilet, the sink, a puddle, the laundry… it's so easy for your phone to wind up soaked through and through. Everyone has an opinion on how best to dry out a wet cell phone, but the technique I like best is to remove the battery and place the phone in a bowl of uncooked white rice. The rice wicks the water from the phone. (If your phone uses a SIM card, remove it too. At least you'll have your data.)

Drying out a wet phone with a hair dryer is often a first impulse, but heat can damage the phone even more. For more ideas on drying, from using silica gel to halogen lamps, see Wikihow.

Amplify your cell phone with a wine glass

Recently I attempted to use my cell phone as an alarm, but ended up oversleeping because I couldn't hear it.

However, there's a quick and easy fix for this. All you need is a wineglass with the stem snapped off and the glass will amplify your cell phone alarm (think of your most annoying ringtone EXTREMELY LOUD). You'll be sure to hear that alarm now. Thanks Nemo!— Wendy Boswell

2 hidden ways to get more from your Gmail address

Taken from the Official Gmail Blog

I recently discovered some little-known ways to use your Gmail address that can give you greater control over your inbox and save you some time and headache. When you choose a Gmail address, you actually get more than just "yourusername@gmail.com." Here are two different ways you can modify your Gmail address and still get your mail:

* Append a plus ("+") sign and any combination of words or numbers after your email address. For example, if your name was hikingfan@gmail.com, you could send mail to hikingfan+friends@gmail.com or hikingfan+mailinglists@gmail.com.
* Insert one or several dots (".") anywhere in your email address. Gmail doesn't recognize periods as characters in addresses -- we just ignore them. For example, you could tell people your address was hikingfan@gmail.com, hiking.fan@gmail.com or hi.kin.g.fan@gmail.com. (We understand that there has been some confusion about this in the past, but to settle it once and for all, you can indeed receive mail at all the variations with dots.)

For me, the real value in being able to manipulate your email address is that it makes it really easy to filter on those variants. For example you could use hikingfan+bank@gmail.com when you sign up for online banking and then set up a filter to automatically star, archive or label emails addressed to hikingfan+bank. You can also use this when you register for a service and think they might share your information. For example, I added "+donation" when I gave money to a political organization once, and now when I see emails from other groups to that address, I know how they got it. Solution: filtered to auto-delete.

Why my Toshiba laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without warning?

Solutions:

1- Run an Antivirus, some viruses can keep the fan running for no reason, of other PC components performing tasks for no reason causing an inevitable shutdown.

2- Run an anti spyware

3- Upgrade the BIOS

4- The most important point. Some Toshiba laptops have a design flaw. The way the fan works it allows dust to come in and build up in front of the CPU unit causing it to build a strong wall of fluffy dust (Look in a pic). This big wall of dust stops the CPU from receiving an airflow from the fan to cool down, which cause it to stay hot and get hotter with time and inevitably do an Emergency shutdown to protect your PC (which is wise, i gotta say).... After researching how to fix my old Toshiba, I found out that this was the only solution since i have tried all the other solutions many times.... So, here how can fix it,

Locate where your CPU unit is on your laptop, you will need to unscrew one of the plastic covers at the back of the laptop. The CPU unit is in a Copper color (Look in the pic), usually it is covered with a thin metal cover, you will need to take this off first to be able to get access to the CPU unit. In some models this metal cover is glued to the CPU, you can easily (after unscrewing the metal cover screws) take it off. Make sure the Laptop is not connected to any power supply and it is OFF, if you just disconnected it from a power supply, I would recommend that you wait for a bit before attempting to touch the CPU (its always worth mentioning, coz if u electrocute ur self, i shouldn't be the one to blame, lol). After taking the annoying metal cover off you will be able to see the WALL OF DUST, in my case it was maaaassive (Look in the Pic), I actually blame the laptop for not shutting down earlier. You will need to take the CPU unit off (DO NOT TOUCH IT DIRECTLY), make sure ur hands are not wet, USE GLOVES, i would strongly recommend that. Take the CPU unit out and take the dust off try to clean around it, i used a hoover CAREFULLY to suck any dust that i can not see. Dont blow in it, coz that will push the dust further in, you need to pull any dust out. After you do all this put the CPU back and the cover, you can fit the metal cover back on as well. When you restart the PC, you will notice that the fan is alot quieter and it should not perform any other stutdowns (assuming you did it right and didnot break anything) I hope this helped. you might need to do this again every 2 years. Tips for avoiding that
- wipe any surface before u put ur laptop on it.
- Dont put ur laptop on beds, couches, carpets or any fluffy surface, coz the fan will suck that in.

How to Break into Windows XP

How to Hack or Break Into a Windows XP Computer Without Changing Password

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Ever forgotten a windows xp password? Well, now you can have the assurance of being able to access an account and reset the password without previously knowing the password. This works for any account with a windows xp computer that's not booted off a network.

Steps

  1. Get physical access to the machine. Remember that it must have a CD or DVD drive.
  2. Go to http://ebcd.pcministry.com/ and download the disc ISO in the pro version.
  3. Download the file and then burn the ISO onto a blank disc using an ISO writer or CD burner such as nero or UltraISO. This creates the EBCD bootable disc. This also has many other tools. You may do this on the target machine or on another machine.
  4. After you have the disk, enter the bios of the target machine and make sure that the first boot drive is the CD or DVD ROM. Chances are it already is.
  5. Boot from the disk. It should automatically load the main screen, but if it asks you to press any key to boot from the CD, do so.
  6. After it has booted, choose option number 5, the password recovery. This will guide you through a set of steps and instructions, and if you don't know otherwise, just press enter and it will use the default options, which will work just fine.
  7. When you get to the list of users, choose the user whose password needs to be reset. Follow the instructions that the program gives you, such as type in the user name, and put the password in as the * key to just blank the password. This is much more successful than changing the password through this program.
  8. Once this is done, make sure that you write the changes to the hive and SAM files (an option the program will ask you about upon exiting).
  9. Reboot the computer and take the cd out before the computer boots from it again.
  10. Log in as that user (it will have no password if you just blanked it).
  11. You can now create a password for that user.

Tips

  • Alternatively, if you already know the password to one account, you can change another local password through the Command Prompt. To do this go to "Start > Run" and type in "cmd" (without quotations) and press enter. When the screen appears, type (again without quotations) "net user username *" and press enter, replacing "username" with the actual username of the account you wish to reset the password for. It will ask you to enter a new password, enter the password and press enter. You will then be required to confirm this password. Do so. Then type "exit" and press enter. Job done. (This will not work if the account you know the password to doesn't have permission to change the password of another account)
  • This CD has many other useful tools that can be used if your computer crashes, so it is a worthy investment.

Warnings

  • Doing this on another computer without permission is illegal, so use this disc at your discretion. It is intended for servicemen and home users to fix a computer (or your own computer) when requested to do so by the owner of that computer.

Track IP ADDRESS

How to Trace an IP Address

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Whenever you get online, your computer is assigned an IP address. An IP address is the Internet Protocol (IP) address given to every computer connected to the Internet. An IP address is needed to send information, much like a street address or P.O. box is needed to receive regular mail. Tracing an IP address is actually pretty straightforward, and even though it's not always possible to track down a specific individual, you can get enough information to take action and file a complaint.

Steps

  1. Find the IP number you wish to check. The format of an IP address is numeric, written as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255.
    • To find the IP of an e-mail sent to you, investigate the message's "headers" by using your e-mail program's "details" or "properties" function. For example, in Outlook Express, select "Properties" from the "File" Menu, or just press ALT+Enter. Next, select the "Details" tab. In Yahoo, click "Full headers" on the upper right hand corner while you see the message. In Hotmail, go to "Mail Display Settings" and set "Message Headers" to "Full" or "Advanced". See this website for more information on viewing headers.

  2. Go to a website that will allow you to look up IP address information. See External Links below. Type the IP number in the input box and submit.
  3. Understand that in many situations you will learn a few things about the IP address:
    • Which internet service provider (ISP) the user is using. In some cases this may be the user's company (e.g. Ford.com). In other cases it may be just one of the large ISPs such as ATT or Comcast.
    • The approximate physical location of the user (e.g. Palo Alto, California.)

  4. Recognize that usually you will not learn the actual name of the person doing at that IP address (e.g. Joe Smith). ISPs will typically only release such information under a court order.

Tips

  • Another way--if you are using a Windows computer--to find out some information about someone is to go to Command Prompt (if you do not know how to do that, go to the Start menu, Run, and type "cmd" and press OK) and type in tracert . On UNIX (including Linux and OS X), open a shell and use the command traceroute

Warnings

  • It is not always possible to find out someone's exact address from this. People can take extreme measures to remain anonymous (even forging e-mails). Your search may just result in knowing the company that the person gets their Internet connection from. You can report abuse to that company, but it's not likely they'll divulge contact information for the individual without a court order.
  • If you are being harassed or you are concerned about your safety, file a complaint with your local police authorities. If you traced the IP address through an e-mail, give them a copy of the e-mail with detailed headers showing.

Things You'll Need

  • A computer
  • Internet
